Layla Shaikley

Co-Founder, Wise Systems, Inc.

Presenter Bio

Layla Shaikley is a co-founder of WISE Systems, a last mile logistics optimization startup. Professionally an architect, Layla launched her design career at NASA. She found herself immersed in a world of space architecture before shifting gears to pursue a graduate education at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning. Throughout her time at MIT, Layla served as an architectural consultant for the United Nations Human Settlements Iraq Programme, UN-HABITAT’s Cairo program, and served as a fellow for MIT’s Special Interest Group in Urban Settlements with a field study in the Amazon. Throughout her international development work, Layla understood the value and need for data in emerging contexts, planting the seeds for what is now WISE Systems. WISE analyzes realtime and historical data to optimize enterprise transportation logistics operations. While building WISE with her team, Layla spent time as a research affiliate at the MIT Media Lab, where WISE Systems is now a member of the Media Lab's E14 Fund. In her spare time, Layla also co-founded TEDxBaghdad. The TEDxBaghdad team has celebrated 4 successful conferences in Iraq’s capital. Layla catalyzed a national conversation on the representation of Muslim women in America through a viral music video that she co-produced, referred to as “#mipsterz” (Muslim hipsters), that stimulated a conversation globally on who gets to represent Islam, why, and how and the importance of personal narrative in a post 911 world.
